For this exercise it was an opportunity to meet the second years. We were put into groups of 6-7 and given an artists name. We received Bill Viola. From this we had to research the artist and design a party around him, including a set, food and costume. I did not know who Bill Viola was. When researching him, I came to find his work was very dark, and included a lot of juxtaposed things such as fire and water, life and death, and also included the human form.
For the short amount of time we were given, keeping it simple was the best idea. We came up with the concept of using bin liners to cover our space, creating a dark atmosphere and include mirrors with material, so when the person went into the space it was an eerie experience. The sound of water also created an 'under water' experience. For our costumes we all decided to wear black, and for our refreshments to carry on the feeling of Bill Viola's juxtaposed pieces, we served flavoured ice pops and bombay mix, resembling hot and cold.
The images above are shots of the completed party. The first image is what the space looked like when you went into it, and the second, what it looked like from outside. I thought our space was different to everyone else's themed parties because it was not obvious to what it was, intriguing people.
